Celebrating Dr Maria Montessori’s Birthday at Montessori Minds

Today we celebrated Dr Maria Montessori’s birthday with stories, hands-on discovery—and yes, a tray of happy cupcakes to finish the day!

Who was Dr Montessori?

We shared with children that Dr Montessori was an Italian doctor, scientist and educator who believed children learn best through freedom within limits, respectful guidance, and a carefully prepared environment. Her vision was simple and powerful: follow the child, nurture independence, and build peace through education.

Discovering her materials (the “why” behind the work)

Children rotated through mini-stations to explore classic Montessori resources and what each one helps us learn:

  • Pink Tower & Brown Stair (Sensorial): Building Visual Discrimination and Concentration.
  • Red Rods & Knobbed Cylinders (Sensorial): size, length, and fine-motor control.
  • Sandpaper Letters & Moveable Alphabet (Language): sound–symbol awareness and early writing.
  • Golden Beads & Bead Chains (Mathematics): quantity, place value, and patterns.
  • Practical Life trays (daily tasks): care for self and environment, coordination, and independence.
  • Puzzle Maps & Culture baskets (Culture): geography, nature, and our diverse world.

We also enjoyed a simple “walk around the sun” to show how birthdays mark the passage of time—linking time, season, and our own growth.

This celebration is part of our ongoing promise to Montessori practice: thoughtful environments, trained educators, and learning you can see and feel. It sits alongside our Reconciliation Action Plan, child-safe culture, and everyday partnership with families.

We closed with yummy cupcakes and a thank-you to the children for showing such care with the materials—and with each other.

It was day to pay our tribute the visionary who has given us the legacy of Montessori pedagogy to bring a difference to the lives of children. It’s pure Montessori: purposeful, peaceful, and confidence-building.
