{"id":4125,"date":"2024-07-22T06:31:54","date_gmt":"2024-07-22T06:31:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/hcmontessori.vic.edu.au\/?p=4125"},"modified":"2024-07-22T06:31:54","modified_gmt":"2024-07-22T06:31:54","slug":"celebrating-naidoc-week","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/montessoriminds.vic.edu.au\/hoppers-crossing\/celebrating-naidoc-week\/","title":{"rendered":"Celebrating NAIDOC Week"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>We had the honour of welcoming Hayley and Maeve to our centre for a special Aboriginal incursion in<br \/>\ncelebration of NAIDOC Week on Monday, the 15th of July. This enriching session provided our<br \/>\nchildren with a deeper understanding and appreciation of Aboriginal culture, specifically focusing on<br \/>\nthe Koorie (Aboriginal people from Victoria) and Gunditjmara (Hayley\u2019s Mob) cultures.<\/p>\n<p>Hayley and Maeve began the session by reading two beautiful stories: &#8220;Welcome to Country&#8221; by<br \/>\nAunty Joy Murphy and &#8220;Country&#8221; by Aunty Fay Muir and Sue Lawson. These stories introduced the<br \/>\nchildren to the significance of acknowledging and respecting the traditional owners of the land.<\/p>\n<p>Hayley then shared words from the Gunditjmara language, explaining where her family is from and<br \/>\nshowing a map of her mob\u2019s land. The children were captivated as they learned about the different<br \/>\nregions and the importance of land in Aboriginal culture.<\/p>\n<p>One of the highlights of the session was when Ms. Hayley brought a small jar of white ochre. Ochre, a<br \/>\nclay found in various colours across Australia, is traditionally used by Aboriginal people to paint their<br \/>\nfaces and bodies for ceremonies and special occasions. Hayley explained how ochre is sourced from<br \/>\nthe land and mixed with water to create paint. This paint is used for art and body decoration. On this<br \/>\nday, we used it to celebrate our connection to the earth and culture.<\/p>\n<p>The session emphasized the importance of cultural connection for Australian First Peoples children.<br \/>\nThis connection is a crucial social determinant of health, contributing significantly to child<br \/>\ndevelopment and wellbeing. For Australian First Peoples children, culture is a source of strength and<br \/>\nresilience, forming the foundation of their values, beliefs, and understanding of their identity and place<br \/>\nin the world.<\/p>\n<p>We also expanded our vocabulary by learning some basic words in the Gunditjmara language. Here<br \/>\nare a few that we practiced:<\/p>\n<p>\u2022<strong> Gunditjmara<\/strong> (pronounced Goon-ditch-a-mara) &#8211; The name of Hayley&#8217;s clan\/tribe.<br \/>\n\u2022<strong> Hello<\/strong> \u2013 Ngata (pronounced na-ta)<br \/>\n\u2022 <strong>Goodbye<\/strong> \u2013 Wurruk (pronounced woo-dook)<br \/>\n\u2022 <strong>Country<\/strong> \u2013 Meerreeng (pronounced meer-eng)<br \/>\n\u2022 <strong>Community<\/strong> \u2013 Ngarraketoong (pronounced nya-rra-ke-toong)<br \/>\n\u2022<strong> Mother<\/strong> \u2013 Ngirang (pronounced near-ung)<br \/>\n\u2022 <strong>Father<\/strong> \u2013 Pipayi (pronounced pip-eye)<br \/>\n\u2022 <strong>Sister<\/strong> \u2013 Kakayi (pronounced kak-eye)<br \/>\n\u2022 <strong>Brother<\/strong> \u2013 Wartayi (pronounced wa-tye)<br \/>\n\u2022 <strong>Baby<\/strong> \u2013 Poopoop (pronounced poo-poop)<br \/>\n\u2022 <strong>Spirit<\/strong> \u2013 Mooroop (pronounced Mu-rroop)<\/p>\n<p>The incursion was a wonderful experience that left a lasting impression on both the children and staff.<br \/>\nIt provided a meaningful way to celebrate NAIDOC Week by fostering an understanding and<br \/>\nappreciation of Aboriginal culture. We are grateful to Hayley and Maeve for sharing their knowledge<br \/>\nand culture with us. The children not only learned new words and traditions but also developed a<br \/>\ndeeper connection to the land and its original custodians.<\/p>\n<p>We look forward to incorporating more cultural learning experiences into our curriculum to continue<br \/>\nbuilding this important foundation of knowledge and respect.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium
