Practical Life<\/em><\/h1>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>
Practical Life is often described as the foundation of the Montessori environment. Through everyday, purposeful activities \u2014 from pouring and sweeping to caring for a garden \u2014 children are supported to build coordination, concentration, independence and a sense of belonging in their community.<\/div><\/div>

What is Practical Life?<\/em> <\/h2><\/div><\/div><\/div>

The Practical Life curriculum area grew out of Dr Maria Montessori's early observations of young children. She noticed that children are naturally drawn to real, purposeful tasks \u2014 the everyday activities they see the adults around them doing \u2014 and that engaging in these tasks appeared to support their concentration, coordination and sense of order.<\/p>\n

Rather than being \"just chores,\" Practical Life activities are presented as carefully prepared, hands-on experiences. Materials are scaled to a child's size and arranged so children can choose and return them independently, within a calm and supportive environment.<\/p><\/div>
